In a beautiful wooded landscape, in a more
elevated karsted mountain area, on the hillside of Mala Kapela
and Plješivica, one can admire a series of about 16 lakes.
This area is the first and the most well-known national park
in Croatia. It was put on the UNESCO's World cultural and
natural heritage list, which proves its special value not
only for Croatia but for the whole mankind. What draws most
attention in this unique park, are the small lakes that are
connected with waterfalls. The Prošcansko jezero lake and
the Kozjak lake are the biggest and highest lying lakes in
the Dolomites area. All lakes in the national park were formed
by travertine (a special type of limestone) depositing. |

The park is situated on the very spring of
the Karst river Korana and it is surrounded by numerous thick
and partially uncultivated beech, fir and spruce forests.
Besides its magnificent lakes and forest, the park also boasts
many caves, springs and meadows. Among the numerous rare animal
species living in the park area, the brown bear is especially
                    worth mentioning.
The Plitivice Lakes region is divided into two areas: the
larger upper lakes area, located in the wooded landscape with
numerous hills, and the smaller lower lakes area, located
in the wild and rocky canyon.  |

The end of the lower lakes area
is marked by a 136-meter-high waterfall of the Korana river.

The access to the waterfalls and the lakes is provided to
the visitors by a special path over wooden bridges. |
